Multiplication Template

We have been working hard on our times tables, and we have just begun to multiply 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. We started using this template in order to break our answers apart into ones and tens. The template also helps to keep our work organized. We fill the forth row with the product of our ones x our number being multiplied. In the fifth row, we write the product of our tens and our number. The sixth line is where we write the sum of those two answers.

This chart takes a little getting used to, however, it seems to help many students break down the process of multiplication. Try to solve a question with your families at home and explore how this chart works.

Example 1: 26 x 3

Hour of Code

This Thursday we will be heading to the computer lab for a special challenge. As a class, we will be taking part in a Computer Science Education Week initiative called The Hour of Code.

We will be joining forces with the over 5,500,000 students who have already learned how to program computer code. Watch the video below to learn more and to get excited about Thursday's challenge.

Interactive hundreds chart

So we have jumped into multiplication in class and it seems to be going really well. We spent some time last week getting our Precision Math up and running and talking about some of the tricks we can use to remember some of the harder multiplication facts. Here is a link to that helpful interactive hundreds chart that we used in class on Friday.

After trying to find some of the patterns that we looked at in class, try out your multiplication facts with this fun game that tests how quickly you can recall your times tables.

Thursday in the computer lab.

Today in class we had a chance to look at some of the subtraction and data management sections of IXL. During our time in the lab this week, you will be working on questions from these two categories. Feel free to work on any of the subtraction questions. In the data management unit, work on sections L.1 to L.5.

Cards by me

This is the third year that Churchill has taken part in the "Cards By Me" fundraiser. This year, room 310 decided to create non-seasonal specific cards so that these cards can be used for any occasion. We decided to create some neat optical illusions while talking about line and shading. Below you will see a photo of some of the cards that have been completed so far. We will be sending home the order forms today. Unfortunately those forms need to be handed in tomorrow to ensure that the cards will be here in time for the holidays.

Skating Dates

With Halloween behind us it is time to start thinking about the winter.

We will be skating four times this year at Dulude Arena. We will be sending home one permission form that will cover all four dates which are listed below. The cost for all four trips will be $10.00.

November 22 - 10:00 - 11:00
December 13 - 10:00 - 11:00
January 10 - 10:00 - 11:00
February 21 - 10:00 - 11:00

This is a good time to sharpen your skates and to try on your gear from last year to make sure that it still fits. Everyone will need a winter sports helmet in order to join us on the ice (that includes all of our parent volunteers).

What a cool use for a Meteorite!

After our trip to Natural Resources Canada, I thought our class would like to see the article I spotted this afternoon. Take a look at the article from Teaching Kids News. After reading the article, look for the section below called Related links. You will see a hyperlink that will bring you to a great video explaining a little more about these two Russian events.

After reading the article and watching the video, feel free to make a comment below about you thoughts.

If we still have time in the lab, you can visit either Typing Web or IXL.

Typing Web

Typing Web is a fantastic resource for learning how to type more quickly and accurately. This website will give you instructions on how to type properly using all of your fingers not just your index fingers.

You will need a username and password to sign in. Your username and password are the same as the ones we use for IXL.

Enjoy!

IXL

We have now got our year-long membership to IXL. This means we will be able to use this great resource at home and at school all the way until June!

As a result of this membership our ixl usernames have changed slightly. The 3 numbers at the end of our passwords have changed from 129 to 490. Our passwords have remained the same.

Our ROCKing Field Trip

We had a great trip to Natural Resources Canada. The class had a chance to see three presentations. We started by learning about an incredible sand dune habitat that exists right here in Ottawa. The Pinhey Sand dune complex is home to some truly incredible insects that you can't find anywhere else in our area.

Our second presentation had us learning about the origins of geological work here in Canada as well as seeing some truly amazing mineral and meteorite samples. We had a chance to perform some of the mineral tests that we observed yesterday on the virtual geology lab.

Our final presentation had us learning about how satellite images are created. We had an opportunity to test our skills matching up maps with corresponding satellite images. We even got a chance to see a multicopter used to capture images from the air!

Let's get ready to ROCK

On Thursday we will be heading to Natural Resources Canada to learn about rocks and minerals. Today we will take a little break from our Pulleys and Gears unit to get ready for our field trip.

The video below includes lots of great information about rocks and minerals. Did you know that scientists have identified more than 3000 different minerals! While watching the video, take a note of ONE really interesting fact that you would like to share with the class, copy this piece of information down on your rocks and minerals page.

After watching the video take a look at this really great online mineral exploration game

Math Blitz video

Today our math Blitzes took a theatrical turn. Take a look at the video below and see how you would have solved our question. Below the video is a photo of our NWTT template in action. Hopefully this new tool will help everyone to organize their work and their thinking when dealing with math problems!

Chopstick Challenge

Today room 209 and 310 got together and did a chopstick challenge! We used it as a fun game to get a better understanding of place value. We used chopsticks to grab gummy fish that were red, orange, yellow and green. Then we would have to find out the value of each fish. Look at the pictures from this fun event!!!

Let's take a test Drive

Today we will be exploring the Google Drive.

The easiest way to get to the sign in for your OCDSB account is to go the OCDSB student website. Be sure to be using Google Chrome and not internet explorer.

Once you have clicked on this website, look for the Google Cloud link on the left of the page. This will take you to a sign in page where you will use your regular sign in account number and password.

Once your account has been opened up you will see a document that I shared with the class. Open it up and follow the instructions.

Have fun!

Pulleys!
