Light travels in straight lines!

In this experiment we observed one of the properties of light. For this experiment we used four cue cards, a little bit of plasticine to hold them up, a pencil and a flashlight. When we shone the light through the little holes in the cue cards, you could see just a bit of light hitting the next card. Our goal was to hit the last card in the middle of the bullseye that we had drawn on. It was challenging to line up all of our cards because you needed to be very precise. The only light that passed through each card was a tiny little ray of light.

Light bends through water

Another thing we have been working on in science is how light bends through water. We had a bit of Plasticine stuck into the corner of a cup. Then we looked over the edge of the cup so we could only see a tiny bit of the plasticine. We then poured water into the cup slowly and it looked as if the plasticine moved! The plasticine didn't move but instead, the light bent and made it look as if it had! This experiment let us explore one of the properties of light.

Exploring sound waves

In science we have been testing how sound waves can move stuff. We used tuning forks to create vibrations. We tested the vibrations three times using salt and three times using water. The first four pictures show us using the tuning forks to vibrate salt that was on saran wrap stretched around our yogourt containers. The last four pictures show us using the tuning forks with the yogourt containers filled up with water.
Everyone liked the experiment and most people were surprised by how much the vibrations can move the salt and water.

BANSHO math!!!!!

In math at the Moment we are working on Bansho. Bansho is a type of math when you are in groups with a question and you have to solve it. We useA big piece of paper, markers, and your communication with your group. Some of the questions are hard and easy for the kids. We are working on geometry and some lines of symmetry.

Some WILD facts about the sun!

This is an incredible video that we watched today. We were shocked to learn just how big the sun really is, and how far away it is from the earth.

Braeden's first update from Mexico

Hola amigos! I'm here in our little house beside the ocean on Isla Mujeres - Island of Women - in Mexico. Today is rainy but still 24o and this morning we played in the ocean. This is my first daily report for Owen to put on the class blog. Yesterday was sunny and 28 degrees and I met new friends Hazel and Elliot who let me use their boogie board and it was very fun. Photos from yesterday are attached. I'll write again and every school day until we return jan 25.

Hasta luega
